I ran the terminal sudo update thing, and now i am running the 'update manager.'

hopefully that will do the trick

I can confirm it absolutely does not work.

I selected what you said from the  synaptic package manager, ticked the boxes, installed, ran the two updates you mentioned, restarted, and still no brightness function.
Did I miss anything or can you tell me some other way?

    Thanks

    on second thoughts, forget it.

I'll just put xp and 7 in and save myself the stress.

    Cheers

    wait - don't do it :)

Open a terminal and type (or copy and paste):

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:voria/ppa

    and add the repository

    Then type:

    sudo apt-get update

Close terminal and open synaptic package manager

    In the search box type:

    Samsung

There should be packages to install for:

    samsung-tools
    samsung-laptop
samsung-backlight (thats the one you want)
    easy-slow-down-manager

Install the backlight one first and check it works.

You can install the others too but do them one at a time as there have been reposrts of the notebook slowing down so if you do then one at a time, you can uninstall anything that causes problems.

    Hope that helps.

The LXDE desktop environment is not the most user friendly, its designed to be very light on resource, so some feature aren't as simple as other desktops, I would suggest Linux Mint, Zorin or Ubuntu.
