Back in 1999, I was called in as a subcontractor to do GM PowerTrain's Y2K upgrade. That was the BIOS bug that had everyone thinking computers would screw up on a global scale and kill the planet.  The year was 1999 and by that time 32 bit PC's in most places I knew were running Windows NT or moving to 2000.  The GM plant I was working in was using Windows 3.11.  After I finished the job, they decided to upgrade to 98.

They were being penny pinchers about the OS, but when it came to swapping out PCs they had no issue tossing out viable computers to replace them with newer machines.  I told them many of the computer BIOS could be flashed and others were not date dependent machines.

Until then, I never would have expected a major manufacturer to be running behind the times.
