My main desktop uses an ASRock motherboard with the chipset/IGP mentioned in the title.  I have spent a good chunk of the evening fighting with it and wanted to report my results.

If anyone does some looking around online for tutorials they will find numerous different methods for installing the proprietary drivers, most of them overly complex.  The Additional Drivers applet finds four "compatible" drivers.  Three closed-source Nvidia drivers, and the open source noveau driver.

I initially tried the legacy 304.117 that was labeled tested, but after a reboot I couldn't set the screen resolution higher than 1024x768 (my monitor runs at 1280x1024).  After manually disabling nouveau to no benefit I tried the 304.117-updates driver, but this time I was stuck with a 800x600 screen resolution.

In the end, the legacy 173.14.39 driver installed and works beautifully.  Just use the additional drivers applet, no manual disabling of nouveau needed.  I find it strange since the other driver claims to support GeForce 6 series and newer.  Anyway, I hope this helps anyone in the future that may fight with this.
