Due to a Lubuntu bug that came through 'proposed updates' and wasn't addressed until it was already pushed through the regular update channels, but has now been fixed, a double network icon appears in the panel. To resolve is fairly easy. Simply go to the menu, click preferences, and default applications for lxsession, untick network and restart. This will not disable your network since its loaded by default. There is a different more complicated way to do this as well but for most users this solution is the easiest way to go. After unticking restart and your double network icon will disappear.
