Vlc only audio no video

I discovered recently vs. distro and I'm very happy because it allowed me to recover my old computer that date 12 years ago now. Thank you!
For audio and video files I prefer to use VLC. For several days, however, does not work. When I open a video file gives me the following message: "Codec not supported: VLC Could not decode the format "h264" (H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)) " and the sound you hear without problems.
Most likely the problem occurred after an upgrade.
I note that other players such as Totem or SMPlayer video you see and hear perfectly.
