How do I reconfigure wired ethernet and change the module used? No ethernet available.

I'm attempting to get lxle working on two inspiron 4000 laptop's....both ran the live cd fine but would abend in the installer with a dbus not responding error so I got the idea to install to the hd's via an inspiron 5150 and then move the hd's back to the inspiron 4000.  This worked fairly well with the exception of the ethernet connections.  Upon bootup neither wifi or wired connections will work and the systems show eth1 and wlan1 with no ip address instead of eth0 and wlan0.  Obviously for the wifi I need to do additional work such as load the firmware for the broadcom etc but I wouldn't think the wired connections would be an issue on hardware this old.

Laptop #1 has wired: Intel 82557/8/9/0/1 Ethernet Pro 100 (rev 08) and wifi: broadcom 4321 (I know this needs the b43 packages but may need additional changes)
Laptop #2 has wired: 3com 3c556b and wifi:  TI ACX 111

What do I need to do to get them "reset" to use current hardware?

12.04.4.  The laptops are older 32 bit ones I'm trying to configure for some former xp users.

they can't both be active at the same time they will fight for the connection. right click on the network icon and disable wireless then hook up the ethernet cord.

even when the wifi cards are ejected (I have not yet loaded drivers for them) the wired connections don't work.  I even went into network manager and deleted/redefined the wired connection 1.  dmesg on the current laptop shows the following over and over:

Upon further inspection the 2nd inspiron that has the 3com 3c556b chip is correctly loading the wired connection...it is only the Intel Ethernet Pro 100 that is giving me an issue as reflected by the error messages above.

The acx 111 kernel module has been removed from ubuntu therefore I assume my only options with it are to use ndiswrapper and the windows driver or get a different wifi card.   I still have been unable to locate anything via google that shows similar issues with the e100 driver.

Any more suggestions/questions or have I stumped the panel?

I've resolved the wifi issues by replacing the atx111 based card with an atheros one.  The remaining issue is the e100 WIRED connection referenced in the error messages a few posts up...the link constantly cycles between up and down....never getting an ip address.  The only similar occurrence I could find online was due to the user having a bad ethernet cable so I tried a 2nd cable even though the one I'm using connects to two other pc's including a 2nd inspiron without issue however the 2nd cable worked identically.  I have the wifi working on the laptop so it can get on the net but occasionally when travelling you will only have access to a wired connection so I'd like to try to get it up and running.   If all else fails I may break down and get a pcmcia based wired ethernet as these laptops only have usb 1.1 so max 12Mbps using usb based solutions.
