WiFI fails on newly installed 32-bit 12.04.4

Installed LXLE 32-bit 12.04.4 on a Dell Inspiron B130. Networking works, WiFi fails. Has a Broadcom 4401 B0... Network applet shows WiFi greyed out, just like it did in the LiveUSB boot.

WiFi is enabled in BIOS, no mechanical switch to disable. Worked in XP.

    Updated system, rebooted, problem persists.

Installed the three b43 packages (skipping lpphy) on the advice of LXLE and rebooted. WiFi still does not appear.

Installed wicd and uninstalled network-manager, launched wicd & detached Ethernet cable. It still does not see WiFi.

open wicd, look for down arrow in top right corner, select preferences find wifi and add either wlan0 wlan1 wlan2 etc until you find which one your card is on and it will show you your internet connection

    Opened Wicd.
Found the tab at upper right for the pull down list and chose Preferences.
      Found WiFi box.
      Set WiFi card to wlan
Clicked OK then Refresh -   "No wireless interface found."

Repeated for wlan0 through wlan7 - No wireless interface found.

    Now what?

i didn't say set it to wlan

i said set it to wlan0   or wlan1  or wlan2  etc

one will find your card and show your networks

You have to click either ok or apply for the settings to take effect. Be sure to take out your ethernet cord and or disable eth0 to see if that helps and or works.

I _did_ click OK after setting to wlan0, wlan1, wlan2, wlan3, wlan4, wlan5, wlan6 and wlan7, each time. I did remove the ethernet cable. I did also try disabling eth0. Nothing worked to bring up WiFi.

Rebooted after the above. Now wireless does not work, and eth0 is completely broken.  Launched hardinfo and Network|Interfaces only shows lo, no wlan?, no eth?  Additional Drivers reveals "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system."

Here's a video on wicd and finding the wirless interface name: www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8WO8NaM2tM. Forward to about 2 minute mark.

And, now, user 'lxle' suggests in the chat room "I would head back there th3n"when I explain it worked with XP and Win8.

Scott, thank you for the assistance, but that's the way I was checking for the wlan? interface already.
