Thanks lxle, simple as I thought. I had wondered what that button was for and it is the ONLY thing that I did not try :-)

But that only removes it for that session, as soon as you reboot it's back.
how do you permanently disable it?

Thanks, uninstalling conky got rid of the baloon.

Any ideas how to make "typhoon" weather load on startup automagically?

Hi sunnyd, I now you probably uninstalled conky already, but for the future. Conky reads the script that is in your hidden folders called .conkyrc  all you have to do is change the name of that script (to lets say) conky, and the conky app would not read your script any longer, but you would still have your script saved for future use when you would want to play with a more full featured conky.
    Just food for thought.
Ps. Just in case you don't know where your hidden folders are, just go to menu>accessories>File Manager>View, then check the show hidden and that's it. Hope this helps
