Troubleshooting WiFi

I installed LXLE yesterday for the first time. Installed easily.
Pretty impressive. I'm having some trouble with the monitor display,
mouse, and Wifi. The desktop is drawn offset and slightly taller than the viewable monitor edges so
that the task bar at the bottom is clipped. The mouse pointer is high by
about 20 pixels (perhaps because of the monitor display mismatch) and
wifi isn't working despite entering in my SSID and login. The Additional Drivers app recommends an NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 96) but because Wifi's not working I can't download it.  I think if can
get the WIFI working I'll be able to update the drivers. What can I do to troubleshoot the WiFi?

instead of stating only whats wrong, how about stating some facts about your computer, is it a laptop or a desktop, does it also have an ethernet port, what kind of wireless card is in it, etc etc.

Sure! It's a mini tower desktop. A PowerSpec 6340 (a MicroCenter brand), bought it nine(!) years ago. The processor is an AMD Sempron 32-bit. NVIDIA chipset on the motherboard. The WiFi card is a NetGear 32-bit PCI card, model WG311. There is a ethernet port. My DSL modem is rather distant so I'd prefer to exhaust my wireless connection attempts before I resort to trying the wired connection. The WiFi is functional. It was working with Windows XP before I installed LXLE. The monitor is an LCD flat screen, ProView brand.

Follow up. In the hopes of downloading the drivers on another machine, I searched for the NVIDIA driver. Found a download site for it at http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/nvidia-96. However, the two options are AMD64 and i386 neither of which is what I have, a 32-bit AMD Sempron. Will one of these work, or is there an AMD32 driver out there?

Your most likely going to have to hook up ethernet, this is not windows, just finding software on another computer and bringing it over to the other machine doesn't usually work with linux because of having to resolve dependencies.

Ok, great. Thanks, I'll give it a try. I'll post the results (probably within the week).

I was able to connect to the Internet with the wired ethernet port. However, Additional drivers failed again, this time with "...no trusted origin, rejecting" errors. See below for the /var/log/jockey.log tail. Searched around but I wasn't able to find any workable solutions. Not sure how to proceed other than giving it a rest for a while.

update the system before trying anything, use synaptic , reload, mark updates, and apply.

Thanks PM lxle. After following your steps, I reran Additional Drivers and the NVidia driver installed without error. The screen display and mouse are now algined properly on the screen. A big step forward. One glitch however. Only a maximum resolution of 640x480 is supported! My monitor can support at least 1028.

check nvidia settings instead of the monitor tool in preferences
