I use ffmpeg for most video conversion.  But today I gave Arista a try and it just kept barking about Gstreamer. I purged it as it seems out of date for my needs and just a flashy python front end.  You might want to look for another media transcoder or just build a front end for ffmpeg. Maybe think about Handbrake being the default?  Just tossing it out there.
