Release cycle
  • Normally, when a new version of ubuntu is released, equivalent versions of Lubuntu and Xubuntu follow in days. When Ubuntu 16.04 came out, an equivalent version of LXLE came along three months later. That's not too bad. But when ubuntu 18.04 came out, the equivalent version of LXLE lagged by nearly a year and a half. By the time LXLE 18.04 came out, people were already using Lubuntu 19.10 betas and release candidates. LXLE 20.04 seems to be suffering a similar lag. Lubuntu and Xubuntu users are on 20.10 now, living two and a half years into the future compared to LXLE users. I'd like to recommend LXLE to people, but the slow releases aren't making it easy.

The releases are slower now than usual. However this is not a bad thing. Older versions of the kernel and software available often results in older hardware being supported better / longer...

Also while the kernel may be older it's security updates are kept up to date.

It's good to note today's 'Lubuntu' is using LxQt and not LXDE as it's base. They've been actively trying to kill LXDE for years. So some of the pause is determining direction.
