IOUS - Icons Of Unusual Size (Cinnamon w. CinnXP-Master)
  • Hello Experienced Linux Users,

Fairly new to Linux (but getting better).

PROBLEM: IOUS - (ICONS OF UNUSUAL SIZE).

After loading LXLE 18.04.3 32bit / Cinnamon / Gnome Tweaks/ Mint-XP-master theme and icons, the main screen looks fine.

The icons in general look fine (and in good proportion), but top and bottom bars are huge and the red circle with x selection icon and the green circle checkmark icon are huge, crowding out usable screen space.

The machine is an older Acer AspireOne netbook KAV60 with RAM upgraded to 2 GB DDR2.
    [Intel Atom N270
    1.6 GHz processor.  https://www.cnet.com/products/acer-aspire-one/specs/]

I have attempted adjusting icon size using the organic "Customize Look and Feel" utility.

For icon theme, I have Win2-7 6.0 selected.

For Widget, I have Redmond selected.

For Other, all tick-boxes are unselected, and under GUI options:

Toolbar style is text beside icons, and

Toolbar icon size, is small toolbar icon.

Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

    Best,

    JR

  • Sorry I don't know much about themes, but the big red X is your close icon, you should try search from the /usr folder for close.xbm or close.png.  Once located, you should be able to make multiple copies of reduced icon sizes 16, 24, 32, 64, 96, and 128 are the standard.  How to tell the theme which one to use is beyond my scope.

Some use .svg (scale vector graphics) those don't seem to required resized versions.
  • Thanks!

I've been very busy in TRW and have not been able to check in on responses until now.

In the interim, not having a ready solution before me, I simply re-installed LXLE 18.04(.05?) 32-bit.  Because I am trying to revive several older machines (1.6 to 1.8 GHz machines, 2 GB RAM), I've left those with the original OOTB configuration.

I have not yet tried adding Cinnamon to those machines, but hope to load the XP type themes and icons from the Elbullazul's b00merang project.

    STUCK, AT:

I have created the /.icons and /.themes directories, gotten PCmanFM working with admin privileges, but am stuck at the "unzip the themes / icons / zip files into their respective directories" stage.

This question is probably best started anew with its own heading to that effect.

    Thanks.

  • I believe the .icons and .themes folder belong  in your home directory and not root.

    Example: /home/user name here/.icons

I recently downloaded a Windows XP theme and replacement icons, the icons worked just fine. I could use the "Customize Look and Feel" program to change them.  The theme pack has  a file index.theme which is not recognized by the system.

I really am not into "nostalgia builds" or trying to make Linux a clone of Windows. I downloaded Ubuntu - Groovy Gorilla to see the latest build and I am not impressed by the desktop with flat gaunt buttons and icons.  I appreciate originality over mimicry.
  • Not receiving a definitive answer here, I nuked the Install, and have loaded SparkyLinux, Xfce / 32 bit instead.

Themed super-easily.  Quite fast, even on older architecture, and has an APTus utility, sort of a Windows-refugee friendly GUI utility, for updating and modifying the install.

    Thank you nonetheless.
