Laptop with an old SiS 771/671 PCIE VGA graphics card - I am stuck in very low res
  • Good evening all,

I would be grateful for an "idiot's guide" to getting this card, built into a Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo V5535 laptop, to work well for me.  LXLE installed well, and in fact the live session displays well, 1024x768 (as does Windows 7 [it is dual boot], using SiS drivers).  However installed  LXLE runs at a miserable 640x480.

Under the live session I ran some terminal queries and please see the two screenshots I will post separately for results.

Ideally whatever the live session does is what I would like to do in the installed version!

With thanks in advance for any help anyone is able to offer,

    Simon

you can check the driver manager first... if nothing there then try this solution at the bottom of the page before attempting anything to drastic.

  • Thank you very much I will try the solution on https://askubuntu.com/a/1191099/996893 and let you know how I get on.

  • Thank you again.  Sadly that did not work.

Apologies for utter newbie-ness, however could you please let me know the command to check the driver manager?  Also, how to scroll through the terminal output.

    --------------------------------

    xrandr now gives:

failed to get size of gamma for output default
    screen 0 minimum 640x480, current 640x480 , maximum 640x480
    default connected 640x480+0+0 0mm x 0mm
    640x480 73.0*

    --------------------------------

glxinfo is identical to that in the screenshot above.

    ----------------------------------
    Any further ideas please?

driver manager is under the control menu and hardware
  • Thank you ... I appreciate the help.

Driver Manager reports "No proprietary drivers are in use".

While there I looked at Display Settings: this shows "the following monitor is detected: Default Monitor.  Resolution 640x480.  Refresh rate 73.0."  I changed this to the only other options: "Resolution Auto.  Refresh rate Auto" and rebooted., however the settings have returned to "Resolution 640x480.  Refresh rate 73.0."

From the screens above, in the live session it is running at a refresh rate of 61.0 when at 1024x768 resolution.

PS:  One other wrinkle: the update of lunux-tools-generic is being held back.  From other stuff I have read this is not a huge issue I believe?

  • Good morning and thank you both for these suggestions.  I am away for a couple of days, and I will then have a go at them - please 'wait out', and thank you again.
  • Many thanks - sorted :)

    And this worked perfectly.

Thank you all for your help.  Regards,  Simon = Springnuts
