Kernel Concerns? It's for the best... honest.

A few have asked or pointed out that LXLE uses Linux Kernel 4.4 and wondered why not the latest?

Pretty simple actually. It's all about compatibility, particularly with older hardware.

LXLE sticks with the kernel initially released with Ubuntu's initial LTS throughout it's life cycle.

There are a couple different categories of 'kernels' such as Mainline, Stable and LongTerm.

LongTerm is what category 4.4 falls under, ensuring that while older/compatible it's also supported.

    Kernel.org states...

There are usually several "longterm maintenance" kernel releases provided for the purposes of backporting bugfixes for older kernel trees. Many Linux distributions provide their own "longterm maintenance" kernels that may or may not be based on those maintained by kernel developers such as Ubuntu.

Any kernel released with Ubuntu's initial LTS release will be officially supported/patched by Canonical for 5 years.

So in other words, you have nothing to worry about and only compatibility to gain with your aging workstations.
