Using the multibootusb app and an USB stick, I compiled 32 bit POSH and rescatux and gparted.
Bios allowed me to select LXLE 14.04.4 32 bit.  No problem.
But neither booting options (direct install or boot live OS) did not boot.

Next, using multi boot, I just made  installation usb choosing the ISO IMAGER tab.
    No problem with installation.

Multiboot does not warranty that you can install from the app. Al thou it works most of the time, they have a disclaimer. :)

I also notice that some brands of USB generally fail, and others usually succeed.

When we delete partition and reformat in Gparted, which is what I always do to any USB I use, does it get rid of the spy ware that might be coming with it?

Does the same spyware via Gfarted removing theory apply to the 2.5" HDDs that I'm playing with?

Once you wipe a disk no mater what that is it will all go away, yes there are software that could get things out maybe. But for the most part it will all go away.
